The Monsoon Mosques of Malabar

The Monsoon winds led the Arab Muslim traders to various parts of South Asia, including Malabar. Malabar later became one of the prominent regions to be influenced by the Arabs and the light of Islam they had carried with them in their virtues. Islam in Malabar accepted forms of culture that were in accordance with to its rules and absorbed them to form a unique cultural amalgamation with local cultures.

The Monsoon mosques explored in this video are prime examples of the bond shared between Islam and local cultures in Malabar. With a special attention given to the architectural design, we explore these mosques as lived space that shapes Muslim sociality and as center of resistance against colonialism and Islamophobia.

This work is just an overview and not a comprehensive documentation of Monsoon mosques.
