Prayer rugs are integral to a Muslim’s life, their presence familiar from masjids to homes. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, musallah shifts spaces from being a sacred or a profane object and significantly places itself in the cultural realm. The Musallah Project hopes to understand and document existing perceptions and new conceptualizations about musallahs through visual arts and reflective writings.
The Monsoon mosques are prime examples of the bond shared between Islam and local cultures in Malabar. With a special attention given to the architectural design, the video explore these mosques as lived space that shapes Muslim sociality and as center of resistance against colonialism and Islamophobia.
